With Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 1 Microsoft introduced support for Outlook contact items in Outlook Web Access. Unfortunately only the default contact folder of the mailbox is supported in this release and neither Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 2 nor 3 has changed this behavior. However, it is possible to enable contacts in any folder via the Outlook Web Access interface by modifying some of the Outlook Web Access Active Server Pages files:

All those modifications are neither documented nor supported by Microsoft. Make a backup of your Outlook Web Access computer (or at least the  \Exchsrvr\Webdata directory). Also keep in mind that when you apply an Exchange Server Service Pack all modifications are reverted back to the original features.

Make sure that Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 with Outlook Web Access is installed and running properly.

If you would like to use this sample with another language version of Microsoft Exchange Server or Microsoft Outlook, it is possible that the sample will not work without modifications. Please consult the source code for more information. This sample is build and checked for a proper function using the following environment:

The archive contains two files. Both are modified versions of those provided by Microsoft Outlook Web Access and must be copied over the existing files. The following table shows the file names and the location: File Description frmroot.asp Contains code to check if the default contact folder is selected. If not an error message is displayed and the user is redirected to the default contact folder. This code has been commented out and marked so that you easily can remove the modification and revert back to the original solution if you like. Located in the directory: C:\exchsrvr\WEBDATA\USA\FORMS\IPM\CONTACT main_fr.asp Contains code to pass the contact folder to the new window handle and to create a new contact in the contact folder. This code has been changed to pass the current folder to the windows handle and the create new contact module instead of the hard coded default contact folder. The code changes has been commented out and marked so that you easily can remove the modification and revert back to the original solution if you like. Located in the directory: C:\exchsrvr\WEBDATA\USA\INBOX If the changes do not work immediately you need to restart Internet Information Server.
